Research Overview

This group is co-headed by Dr Dean Freestone and Dr Andre Peterson.

The Neural Engineering aspects are focused on the practical application of our knowledge of biophysics of the brain to repair, regulate or replace broken neural circuits. The team bridges the fields of electronic engineering, computer science, statistics and neuroscience.

The Brain Dynamics aspect is focused on developing mathematical theories that can be used to gain new insights into how our brains work and process information. Conceptual insights provided by theoretical underpinnings of brain dynamics have the potential to unlock how the structures of our brains give rise to both normal and diseased brain states.

The two aspects of the research group are unified under the common goal of improving the lives of people who have uncontrolled epileptic seizures. The theory of Brain Dynamics provides a description of the biophysics of the brain, which can be utilised by Neural Engineering methods in clinical devices.
