Research Overview
Our clinicians, nursing and allied health staff are actively involved in research to help better understand and treat kidney diseases and improve patient outcomes. We lead and participate in national and international research trials including quality improvement projects, pharmaceutical sponsored trials while strongly collaborating with the Australian Kidney Trials Network to contribute to research initiated by some of Australia’s leading nephrologists.
Current active research includes:
AKTN CKD-FIX: Controlled trial of slowing of Kidney Disease progression From the Inhibition of Xanthine oxidase
ASCEND Trials: Phase III, investigating efficacy of Daprodustat (hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl-hydroxylase inhibitor) (HIF-PHI) in anaemia associated with CKD.
Chronic Disease IMPACT: Chronic Disease IMPACT (Chronic Disease early detection and Improved Management in PrimAry Care ProjecT)
FIGARO/FIDELIO: Efficacy and safety of finerenone in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and the clinical diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease
PODOCYTE: Phase II investigating efficacy on and safety of Corticotropin in the Treatment of Proteinuria due to Treatment Resistant/Treatment Intolerant Primary FSGS.

The Nephrology Department is also a part of the Western Chronic Disease Alliance
(Western Health Units: Endocrinology & Diabetes, Internal General Medicine, Cardiology and Stroke) which has been established to improve outcomes for patients with chronic diseases in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
