Doctor of Medical Science

The Doctor of Medical Science (DMedSc) is a research doctorate offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to medical graduates.

There are two options of study:

1. Candidature

Course Code: J15AA

The Doctor of Medical Science by candidature is designed for medical graduates to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research at the doctoral research level in one of the departments of the Melbourne Medical School and in some and in some Faculty-based centres.

Candidature can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis and candidates will be required to submit a thesis that demonstrates a significant contribution to the research field.

2. Compilation of Papers

Course Code: J15TC

The Doctor of Medical Science (by compilation of papers) is available to medical graduates who have a significant background in research and research publications prior to applying for this course. You will have a demonstrable relationship with the department through which you are applying prior to the time of submission. Selection is at the discretion of the Head of the Department with whom you have discussed your research publications and intention to apply under for the Doctor of Medical Science by compilation of papers.

The Head of the Department will appoint an adviser to guide you in choosing the number of papers for the compilation, in particular, those in which you are the first author, and in preparing the compilation of published papers for examination. The publications are normally based on research undertaken in the ten years prior to submission.

Enrolment in the course takes place on the date you submit your compilation of published papers for examination. Your enrolment status is 'under examination' and for this reason, course fees are payable on the day of enrolment. Course fees are not permitted to be deferred under Fee-Help for this course.

International applicants for the compilation of published papers do not have to be in the country although it is expected that you will have a demonstrable relationship with the department through which you are applying and that this relationship was well established prior to the submission.
