SexRurality Conference 2019

Conference Wrap Up

The biennial SexRurality Conference was held in August 2019 at the RACV Goldfields Resort in Creswick. Over 160 delegates attended across the two-day program. The plenary room sessions included guest speaker Fiona Patten MP, a lived experience panel hosted by broadcaster and author, Yumi Stynes and a group presentation on Sexual Health initiatives in ACCHOs. There were important updates on chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis by sexual health experts, and an overview of the findings from the 6th National Survey of Secondary Students and Adolescent Sexual Health. The afternoon sessions offered paper presentations in the following areas:

  • Place-based and setting-based initiatives to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes
  • Open topics
  • Sexual health research involving rural communities; and abortion care in rural settings

In addition to the mainstream program, the conference also offered a theatre performance by the ILBIJERRI Theatre Company, a drama workshop, creative arts performers, a resource exchange area, welcome drinks and a conference dinner.
