Leadership in Learning Health System Course Collaboration in Yogyakarta & Jakarta

The Department of Paediatrics is delighted to share the successful delivery of a 2-day Leadership in Learning Health System course in collaboration with Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta.

Jakarta

Jakarta Participants - Department of Paediatrics

The course featured special guest speakers who provided invaluable insights on quality improvement and innovation. Professor Aman Pulungan inspired participants with his persistent commitment to bringing hydrocortisone to Indonesia, encapsulating his experience with the quote "Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking." - Antonio Machado.

Additionally, Dr Maria Endang Sumiwi, Director General of Public Health from the Ministry of Health Indonesia, shared her three-pronged approach to Quality: Quality of Program, Quality of Service, and Quality of Organisation.

A key takeaway for participants was the profound realisation to ‘use tools and invest in people’ rather than ‘use people and invest in tools.’

Inspiring reflections from participants included:

  • "Being a leader is always to start with ourselves and start with a single and simple step."
  • "Start to think from 'why we have to do it' instead of 'what should we do next.'"
  • "Ways to improve by applying PDSA to achieve a goal. Use and analyse the data, elaborate the plan, and don't forget to evaluate."

The team also visited Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Nasional Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Here, they engaged with Dr Supriyanto, President, Director and CEO, and Dr Sumariyono, Director of Medical Service and Nursing.

Yogyakarta - Department of Paediatrics

This course brought together emerging paediatric leaders across 21 departments in the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing to explore key topics such as leadership practices, emotional intelligence, team dynamics, conflict resolution, and using data for system improvements.

A highlight of the course was an insightful panel session hosted by Professor Amy Gray, Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne. The panel featured Professor Yodi Mahendradhata, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Professor Adi Utarini, and Professir Mei Neni.

Professor Yodi, who identifies as an "introvert or quiet leader," shared his unique approach to leadership: lead by listening, learn from failure, get knocked out, get up and move on, and keep learning!

Participants were engaged and enthusiastic, sharing at the end of the course that they now realised: "Everyone is a leader, including me."
The team were delighted to hear feedback such as: "The balance between knowledge, group activities/discussion, and fun activities is great. Excellent workshop, inspiring and fun!" This aligns with active learning pedagogy and adult learning principles—learning should be fun, even for adults.

Professor Amy Gray, Lichin Lim, Dr Jane Standish, and Jane Hawtin extend their heartfelt gratitude to collaborators Dr Alatas Fatima Safira, Dr Nina Dwi Putri, Dr Tartila, Dr Eggi Arguni, Dr Ida Safitri Laksono, Dr Braghmandita Widya Indraswari, and all participants for making these courses a resounding success. Terima kasih, Matur nuwun.

Here's to fostering the next generation of paediatric health leaders dedicated to advancing paediatric care and quality improvement in a learning health system.
