Expert Advice for ABC News
Professor Karlheinz Peter, Head of the Baker Department of Cardiometabolic Health, has given expert advice featured in the ABC News article “Possible link between Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and rare heart inflammation under investigation”.
ABC News has published an article on Wednesday 30th June 2021 entitled “Possible link between Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and rare heart inflammation under investigation”.
Within this article, Professor Karlheinz Peter stated that the development of myocarditis following Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines is relatively rare, and generally not life-threatening. Professor Peter also stated that “these kinds of side effects, when you look at the large numbers, are really minor, we have good treatment and in the vast majority of cases, there is no long-term problem."
The risk of serious illness or death from contracting COVID-19 is far greater than the risks associated with the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. As stated by Professor Peter, “there is no comparison: COVID is a deadly disease and myocarditis/pericarditis is not classified as a deadly disease”.
