Title: The role of cardiac output and fluid responsiveness measurements in improving outcomes after major abdominal surgery in adults.
Synopsis:
Increasing cardiac output during major abdominal surgery can potentially reduce complications that result from a relative lack of oxygen delivery to vulnerable organs. The compiled published studies showed a reduction in complications in a meta-analysis but this was not confirmed in a prospective randomized control trial. Separately, a higher cardiac output was observed in patients that had additional intraoperative fluid with a reduction in kidney injury. The limitations of the technologies used were also studied. The benefit of a higher cardiac output is more limited than initially suggested and may be influenced by the precision of the cardiac output technology.
