Professor John Furler appointed Honorary Professor

John stepped down from his position within the Department at the end of 2020 while his academic career was heading towards an upward trajectory with a promotion to Professor imminent. He was tremendously successful with mentoring others toward successful research funding and he achieved a publication in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology (2020) for his novel RCT of professional-mode flash glucose monitoring in adults with type 2 diabetes in general practice.  This was a remarkable achievement for a Clinician-researcher in general practice even without counting his success with NHMRC grants and awards for his research.

John has a high international profile in primary care research especially in the UK and in the Asia Pacific Region and is still serving the Association of Academic Primary Care in the Asia pacific region, mentoring early career researchers. He was awarded the most distinguished paper award by the Society for Academic Primary care (SAPC) in the UK.

He is a valuable clinician researcher and continues to teach our medical students in the areas of social equity in health care and in diabetes and endocrinology. He services a population in Richmond where there is an ethnically diverse community and many with vulnerabilities due to social disadvantage and complex issues including drug and alcohol addiction.

As an honorary of our Department, Prof Furler will continue to mentor our early career clinician researchers and our medical students and provide advice and input to the department’s research strategy bringing an academic and increasingly a community clinical practice lens.
