New nurse immuniser graduates provide much needed injection for the workforce

The Immunisation (Nurse Immuniser) short course is based on the National Immunisation Education Framework for Health Professionals (2017) and has been accredited by the National body for health education, Health Education Services Australia (HESA).

This successful project was made possible by a team effort between the Mobile Learning Unit and the Department of General Practice. Jane Henty, Manager of Teaching and Learning in the Department of General Practice states, “The collaboration between the two teams meant we were able to get an influx of nurses out into the community vaccinating those in need. Without the expertise of both teams, this initiative would not have been possible.”

Our nurses have come from all walks of life. One student’s story and her contribution to the community is told below.

Julie’s story

“I am 63 years old and have worked as an anesthetic nurse at Wyong Hospital for 23 years.

I finished the immunisation course in December last year. I wanted a change of career with less stress. So, I resigned from theatres, went casual, and decided to work in the COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

Shortly after joining the clinic, I decided to get my certificate in immunisation on and applied for the course at the University of Melbourne. So, at the age of 63 I enrolled and completed the course in 10 weeks. I haven’t studied in years! I truly loved it, but for someone who didn’t know any of the schedules or names of vaccines that are used nowadays, there was a learning curve.

The course was amazing and the support and guidance from Tracy was brilliant! I joined the Facebook group, and it was wonderful and informative. I learnt so much and loved it! I passed the exams on my first attempt and that is because the course was so well constructed it enabled me to have confidence. I am proud of myself that at my age I could do this!

I’m currently working in a COVID-19 vaccination and flu clinic. Once that closes, I want to work as a nurse immuniser as I really enjoy the work. Meeting the people – no matter what age – has been fulfilling, even the screaming five-year-olds! I only wish I did the course earlier in my career, however I will continue to do what I enjoy and have worked for in my course.”
