Meet our New Students
PhD Candidate: Renee Fiolet
“I am a General Practice nurse who works full time lecturing at Deakin University, where I focus on Primary Health Care and Indigenous Health. I have three children. I’m really enjoying undertaking my PhD with Prof Kelsey Hegarty and Dr. Laura Tarzia as supervisors; and love the welcoming environment within the Department!”
PhD Candidate: Carol O’Dwyer
“I am a Registered Psychologist and PhD candidate at the Department of General Practice. My research will explore staff’s experiences of gender sensitive care for women with a history of mental illness and sexual violence. It will also look at how gender sensitive care is enacted across psychiatric inpatient units. My supervisors are Prof. Kelsey Hegarty, Dr. Laura Tarzia (UoM) and Dr. Sabin Fernbacher (NWMH).”
PhD Candidate: Sibel Saya
“I am a genetic counsellor from Melbourne and I’ve just returned home after living in London for five years. In the UK, I was working at the Institute of Cancer Research on cancer screening studies for men at a higher risk of prostate cancer due to their ethnicity, genetics or family history. I’ve returned to Melbourne to start a PhD under Jon Emery and Jenny Walker, working within the CRISP studies looking at targeted colorectal cancer screening in a primary care setting.”
PhD Candidate: Cynthia Brown
Topic: The development of an online survey tool to measure abusive technology use
in young people’s dating relationships.
Supervisors: Primary supervisor - Professor Kelsey Hegarty, Secondary supervisor - Associate Professor Lena Sanci.
Congratulations and farewell to our 2016 Honours students who have now completed their year with us. Jason and Giulia have applied for the PhD and Masters program within the department, respectively; Lachlan has been accepted to study medicine in Sydney; Reesha is working as a Research Assistant at the department and plans to study for medicine the following year; and Maddie and Janet are taking a gap year and travelling overseas whilst contemplating the next step on their career journey.
We wish them well and thank them for an excellent year of hard work.
