Students will be able to perform ultrasound to explore the human ‘living’ anatomy and physiology and some pathology of heart, lungs, abdomen and pelvis on simulators and blood vessels on simulators and humans. These skills form the foundation for point-of-care-ultrasound assisted diagnosis and procedures that is becoming an essential skill for all medical and surgical specialties

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the physics, transducer and machine componentry, image optimisation pertaining to ultrasound image generation and biosafety for clinical applications of ultrasound.
  • Describe how ultrasound can improve the accuracy of conventional clinical examination.
  • Perform ultrasound on a simulator to recognise the normal ultrasound anatomy of the heart, lungs, upper airway, abdomen, pelvis and vascular systems.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform a systematic ultrasound examination, acquiring standardised sequence of images of the heart, lungs, abdomen, pelvis and vascular system.
  • Critically evaluate the role of clinical ultrasound as an important opportunity to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
  • Describe how ultrasound can be for health promotion and preventive education of individuals.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness through analytical reflection on their practice, recognition of their limits, and continual improvement of their knowledge and skills to enhance their performance.
  • Demonstrate and describe the importance of working effective and respectfully in small teams, and by sharing learning with colleagues of all disciplines.
