Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Executive Committee

The Department of O&G Executive Committee has oversight of all Department activities. It serves as a forum for high level decision-making and advice to the Head of Department and Deputy Heads of Department on a range of strategic issues to support the Department’s development, performance and optimal use of resources.

Terms of Reference

  • To formulate the Department’s strategic plan
  • To decide on activities to achieve the outcomes specified in the strategic plan
  • To monitor and review performance against the strategic plan ensuring School and Faculty performance indicators are met, including benchmarking against other Departments in Australia and internationally as much as feasible
  • To advise the Head of Department on the management of a range of Department resources
  • To oversee the preparation of Department plans, budgets and policies in strategic areas for submission through the HoD to the Melbourne Medical School, and the monitoring of performance thereof
  • To provide leadership and innovation in research, teaching and learning and engagement across the Department
  • To establish and contribute to working groups as necessary to support Committee initiatives
  • To assist in the positioning of the Department within the School, Faculty and Health Services
  • To develop and deliver the annual strategic planning day and annual report

  • Research and Research Strategy Committee

    The Department of O&G Research and Research Strategy Committee (R&RS) is an advisory committee of the Department of O&G Executive. In accordance with the vision of the Department of O&G to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence for academic Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Paediatrics, it has overall responsibility for the development and translation of the Department’s research strategy. The committee also oversees and promotes the development and integration of the Department’s knowledge exchange and impact strategy with its commitment to research excellence.

    The Committee aims to strengthen a departmental culture that encourages:

    • Research Collaboration
    • Bridging of fundamental, clinical and translational research across disciplines
    • Mentoring of early-mid career researchers, which is central to the establishment and retention of excellence in research.

  • Research Training Committee

    The Department of O&G Research Training Committee (RTC) has overall responsibility for the development and translation of the Department’s research training strategy, aligned with the Faculty and School’s research strategies, policies and initiatives, and is committed to providing students undertaking research training with a valued positive student experience.

    The focus being on Honours and Graduate Research (GR) programs.

    The Committee aims to strengthen a departmental culture that encourages:

    • Research training support and networking
    • Mentoring of graduate researchers, to encourage and facilitate research of the highest quality

  • Learning and Teaching Committee

    The Department of O&G Learning and Teaching Committee (LTC) has overall responsibility for oversight and enhancement of education and training capacity and capability across Women’s and Newborn Health for the benefit of our MD students throughout their course, for our partner hospitals and for the medical and wider community through other course offerings.

    The Committee aims to strengthen a departmental culture that encourages:

    • Mentoring and professional development of our teachers, to encourage and facilitate teaching of the highest quality
    • Develop and facilitate career enhancement activities for DOG clinician-educators

  • Engagement and Clinical Partnerships Committee

    The Department of O&G Engagement and Clinical Partnerships Committee is an advisory committee of the Department of O&G Executive which has overall responsibility for the ongoing engagement and relationship building with our hospital and healthcare partners. These include Western Health, Northern Health, Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW), Royal Women’s Hospital (RWH), St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), The Epworth Hospital, and rural healthcare settings as part of the Department of Rural Health.

    The Committee aims to strengthen a departmental culture that encourages:

    • Research Collaboration within and between clinical services in women’s and newborn health colleagues
    • Learning and Teaching excellence in healthcare settings
    • Strong engagement with health services and/ or government as they make plans for capital works, major appointments or service planning with direct relevance to UoM Dept. O&G
    • Engagement with Melbourne Academic Centre for Health (MACH) women’s health committee
    • Wider community engagement and the creation of multidisciplinary networks

    The Department of O&G People Development – Welfare and Community Committee (PD-W&C) has overall responsibility for the promotion of a dynamic, sustainable culture of professional development, mentorship, and community support for academic and professional staff as well as our wider community of nurses, midwives and research assistants, who we work closely with on a daily basis.

    The Committee aims to strengthen our departmental culture and equip members of the department of O&G for success by offering meaningful mentoring expertise, career development support and resources. We want to foster a culture of inclusive excellence by actively promoting kindness and collegiality and supporting diversity, inclusion, and equity in all its forms, to expand and enrich our work and to elevate the careers of our staff.
