Thesis Title: Rapid acute care genomics: Challenges and opportunities

Thesis Summary: Rapid genomic sequencing (rGS) facilitates results within days for critically unwell infants and children, however its use presents novel genetic counselling issues and a unique impact on families. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 parents whose children had rGS, and 16 genetic counsellors and 4 intensivists working in this setting. Interview transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Although there is substantial enthusiasm surrounding this new application of genomics, this study provides evidence to ensure its use remains patient centred.
