Thesis Title: Estimation of age-specific reference intervals for laboratory blood tests in children

Thesis Summary: Reference Intervals (RIs) are an important clinical assessment tool for assessing laboratory test results. Establishing paediatric RIs is a complex process due to unavailability of samples, variation in test results between analysers, age-specific changes in biomarkers and lack of a guideline in terms of statistical methods. This thesis demonstrated feasibility of collecting blood samples prospectively from healthy children, compared test results across five analysers, established common continuous age-specific RIs, and proposed and evaluated the performance of a novel statistical method.
