The Department of Psychiatry Farewells Jan Mariani

After an illustrious twenty-five-year career with The University of Melbourne, our own Jan Mariani will be retiring at the end of 2021.

Jan Mariani began her career with the University in 1997 with the then-Hawthorn Institute of Education, prior to its merger with the University. She variously worked in Human Resources, Finance, and the University Secretary’s Office, before joining the Department of Psychiatry eleven years ago in 2010. Her experiences in corporate services within the University afforded Jan valuable oversights regarding how to solve complex issues, including an extensive understanding of where support functions are located.

Jan’s preference for making a phone call, rather than submitting an online query form, is testament to how she has built a vibrant network of working relationships within the University, which has served her well over many years. She has constantly gone above and beyond to assist staff and students, and Jan leaves the University with many lasting friendships. Her kindness, authenticity, and generosity to impart knowledge has made Jan a valuable member of the Department’s team over many years. Those of us who have worked with Jan throughout her career with the University will know how highly and widely regarded she is, and just how much she will be missed. Jan has inducted five successive Heads of Department in Psychiatry, all of whom have benefited from her immense corporate knowledge.

Many staff and students attended the recent Department of Psychiatry end-of-year celebration event in mid-December to farewell Jan, acknowledging the enormous contributions that she has made to not only the life and work of the Department and the Melbourne Medical School, but to the wider University. Please join us in warmly wishing Jan all the very best, as she segues into a well-deserved - and no doubt active - retirement.
