Our Department provides professional health education and research training in a rural context. Based at Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley, we have major nodes at Ballarat and Wangaratta and associations with nearly 40 smaller towns in rural Victoria.

Department of Rural Health

Our Purpose

The Department of Rural Health operates within the Melbourne Medical School at The University of Melbourne.

Our purpose is to provide professional health education and research training in rural areas with an aim to increase the rural health workforce. We work closely with the local community and healthcare partners to deliver on a shared vision to increase, support and retain the rural health workforce. Our partnerships and community involvement underpin our teaching and research.

The Rural Clinical School is a key program of the Department of Rural Health, the University of Melbourne’s centre for teaching, research and community engagement in rural health.

Aboriginal Health

The Department of Rural Health has a strong commitment to, and is actively involved in, education and research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. We support Aboriginal students undertaking a range of courses – from the Specialist Certificate in Empowering Health in Aboriginal Communities ; through to the Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Health in Rural Communities, Master of Public Health and PhD. We also support students studying nursing programs at GOTAFE and La Trobe University in the Goulburn Valley (in partnership with ASHE).

Going Rural Health

The Going Rural Health team supports around 1500 allied health and nursing students each year from a range of different universities and disciplines to undertake a rural clinical placement.

The team actively works with health services and education providers, along with students directly, to assist and improve the learning and rural experiences that students gain during their placement.

The Goulburn Valley Regional Training Hub is a Commonwealth Funded program managed by the Department of Rural Health, University of Melbourne.

Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health

The vision of the Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health (CERSH) is that all rural Victorians have access to quality sexual health care, information and support that is tailored to their individual needs.
