ADCTN Now Accepting Protocols for Diabetes Clinical Trials

The Australian Diabetes Clinical Trials Network (ADCTN), a collaborative initiative between Diabetes Australia and the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI), is now open for protocol submissions. This exciting development offers researchers the opportunity to receive expert review and potential endorsement for investigator-initiated diabetes clinical trials.

Launched on 3 September 2024 in Brisbane, ADCTN aims to increase the number of diabetes clinical trials in Australia, ultimately improving outcomes for people living with diabetes. The network provides two tailored review pathways:

  1. Expert Review & Feedback: Ideal for refining protocols before ethics or funding submissions.
  2. Formal Endorsement: Includes presentation to the ADCTN Executive Committee and a Letter of Endorsement if approved.

Professor Elif Ekinci, ACADI Director and Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, emphasises the importance of this initiative.

"Clinical trials are essential to inform new ways to prevent, detect, or treat diabetes. By advancing our understanding of different treatments and their impacts, we can significantly improve care for people living with diabetes." said Professor Elik Ekinci.

This free service offers structured feedback from leading diabetes researchers and individuals with lived experience, supporting the development of high-quality, patient-centred clinical trials in diabetes research.

Professor Grant Brinkworth, Director of Research at Diabetes Australia, said the ADCTN service will assist to enhance the development and quality of Diabetes Clinical trials across the sector. This will increase research funding competitiveness to conduct more clinical trials in Australia to deliver new ground-breaking therapies and treatments to improve the lives the people living with and at risk of diabetes.
