EMCA Mentoring Program: Career Journeys and Pivot Points

The Melbourne Medical School (MMS) Support Team recently hosted Career Journeys and Pivot Points as part of the MMS EMCA Mentoring Program.

The session highlighted the realities of academic careers, exploring how researchers navigate change, disruption and unexpected shifts. Speakers shared personal stories of career pivots, from moving countries and changing fields to returning to study and shaping careers in non-traditional ways. Their valuable insights offered reassurance and encouragement for early to mid-career researchers who may feel uncertain about their own career paths.

Open to all members of the MMS and the wider Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, the  diverse panel featured  Associate Professor Melissa Mulraney, Dr Warda Syeda, Professor Frédéric Hollande, and Dr Amy Hamilton, and was mediated by Professor Vera Ignjatović AM.

The panellists’ honesty and openness resonated with attendees, who valued hearing that success in academia can take many different forms. Their diverse experiences reminded us that careers rarely follow a straight line, and that flexibility, values and personal circumstances can shape rewarding and impactful paths.

The Melbourne Medical School is committed to fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. We thank all the speakers, organisers, and participants for making this hybrid event possible.
