Reflections from the Head of School
These past few months at the Melbourne Medical School have been both busy and demanding, yet rewarding, giving me many opportunities to connect with our community in meaningful ways.
A key highlight was travelling to Shepparton for the Dungala Kaiela Oration, co-hosted by the Kaiela Institute and the University of Melbourne. This event challenges and inspires us to work towards a shared cultural identity and an inclusive vision of nationhood that recognises the Yorta Yorta and other First Nations peoples. We experienced a phenomenal oration delivered by Co-Chair of the First People’s Assembly of Victoria, Ngarra Murray.

Another memorable occasion was attending the Teddy Bear Hospital Winter Check-Up at Chadstone Shopping Centre. It’s always a joy to watch our medical students engaging with families and children, bringing care, compassion and a sense of fun to healthcare alongside students from throughout MDHS.
Last month, I was delighted to host the Donor Appreciation Event at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). It was a wonderful evening to thank those who generously support the School and to share stories of the real impact their contributions make.
I was also thrilled to attend the launch of the newly relocated Medical History Museum, which showcases the long journey of medicine through the stories of generations past. The museum officially opened this week, and I highly recommend checking it out at 233 Bouverie Street, Parkville.

For more insights into the Museum, you might enjoy the latest MMS Network podcast with Dr Jacqueline Healy, Director of the Faculty Museums for Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, where she shares some of the fascinating stories behind the museum.

Beyond the School, I’ve had the chance to see several Melbourne Theatre Company productions including Destiny, Mother Play and The Wrong Gods. I encourage you to make the most of the staff discount and immerse yourself in these memorable and entertaining performances.
As the days grow longer and the first signs of spring appear, the year feels as though it’s gathering pace. I hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy the occasional glimmer of sunshine, and I look forward to what the final months of 2025 will bring.
