Professor Sarath Ranganathan awarded prestigious TSANZ Research Medal
Professor Sarath Ranganathan, Head of the Melbourne Medical School, has been awarded the prestigious Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) Research Medal, recognising his exceptional and sustained contributions to respiratory medicine.

Alongside his role as Head of the Melbourne Medical School, Professor Ranganathan serves as a consultant at The Royal Children’s Hospital and researches through the Respiratory Research Group at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. He is a distinguished paediatric respiratory physician and clinician scientist with over 30 years of contributions to research, clinical care and medical education. His research portfolio, which includes more than 350 peer‑reviewed publications and over $70 million in funding, has been transformative in the early detection and management of childhood lung disease, notably cystic fibrosis and asthma.
The TSANZ Research Medal was presented to Professor Ranganathan at the gala dinner of the TSANZSRS Annual Scientific Meeting at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday, 30 March 2026. He marked the occasion in memorable style, dressed for the Wild West-themed dinner.
