Making a difference in the North

Students and staff from the Northern Clinical School have made wonderful contributions to supporting the pandemic through their contributions to patient care and teaching.

Students and staff from the Northern Clinical School have made wonderful contributions to supporting the pandemic through their contributions to patient care and teaching.

I would first like to congratulate the Northern Clinical School Teachers of the Year:

Mr. Krinal Mori, a general surgeon and Dr Jack Henderson, medical education registrar, are awarded MD2 Teacher of the Year. Students described Krinal as a passionate educator and doctor with an empathic bedside manner who was able to break down complex concepts and provide a safe learning environment. Jack showed commitment and enthusiasm to teach in the face of a significant clinical workload and created an environment of inclusion, role modeled patient-centred communication and provided effective feedback.

Associate Professor Wei Qi Fan, a neonatologist, is awarded MD3 Teacher of the Year. Wei Qi is a long-standing recipient of this award, she continues to show the students commitment, enthusiasm and advocacy which ensures students have a fantastic time undertaking their Children and Adolescent health rotation at Northern Health.

I would lastly like to acknowledge the significant contributions made by the medical students who undertook surge workforce roles at Northern Health. Over 40 students worked as Clinical Assistants in a range of services including the Emergency Department, COVID monitoring program, Hospital without Walls program, Sotrovimab and oximetry programs. Dr Amanda Baric was integral to ensuring students were supported and involved in unprecedented clinical work.

Thank you to all the Northern Clinical School professional, academic and clinical staff for standing by the students and demonstrating their genuine concern for the students’ welfare and learning. Despite all being exhausted, there is a sense of accomplishment, achieved through shared respect and teamwork.

On behalf of the Northern Clinical School, wishing everyone a relaxing, restorative summer break!

Dr Leonie Griffiths
