Introducing the Paediatric Academy
The Paediatric Academy is a new collaborative organisation that has been launched by the Department of Paediatrics. It is designed to develop and grow an interprofessional community for academic paediatrics across the Melbourne Children’s Campus, supporting life-long learning and for staff, alumni and partners.

The Paediatric Academy has four key functions:
- Professional development
- Networking and mentoring
- Communication
- Celebrating academic achievements and contributions to the Melbourne Children’s Campus.
These functions will be achieved through a blended approach combining regular face-to-face and hybrid events alongside an online platform to support information sharing and networking.
Rationale:
The Melbourne Children’s Campus is composed of four partner institutions; The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation (RCHF). Each institution houses professionals of unique expertise and provides resources, programs and initiatives often via their own technology platforms or networks.
As the notional custodian of education, the Department of Paediatrics encompasses students and staff as well as providing a home for more than 400 honorary staff members spread within and outside the campus. A survey of these University honorary staff members in 2021 articulated the need for more active engagement and support of this cohort.
The Academy is a unified initiative and has been proposed to fill this gap and international examples such as the Boston Children Hospital’s Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship, have been explored as models.
Growing our community:
The Academy will be designed for evolution – that is we expect our members and our functions to grow and evolve as we identify where and how it can add value to the work done on campus.
This Academy is open to all professionals who have an interest in paediatrics. We look forward to connecting, sharing and learning from each other.
