SHINE trial selected as finalist for the 2022 Victorian Clinical Trial of the Year

The SHINE trial, led by Dr Kate Hodgson from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was selected as a finalist for the 2022 Victorian Clinical Trial of the Year. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2022, Dr Hodgson’s trial addressed a critical problem in the care of newborn babies.

Newborns who are very unwell require a tube to be inserted into the trachea (windpipe) to allow the medical team to provide breathing support directly to the lung. This is a challenging procedure because of the tiny airway and instability of the baby.

Dr Hodgson’s trial demonstrated that a simple technique involving high flow nasal oxygen could be used to ensure stability of the baby and allow the clinician more time to complete the task. This technique is now being adopted into clinical practice around the world.
