Australian 3dMed Symposium 2017

The third annual 3dMed Symposium 2017 (#3dMedAu17) was held on Friday 25th August at Austin Health. The conference was hosted by the 3dMedLab, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne.
The all-day program was opened by Frank McGuire MP, Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Medical Research, to a packed audience covering a wide range of topics in 3D Modelling, 3D Printing, and Virtual Reality in Medicine and Surgery. The Symposium featured numerous high-profile speakers from clinical medicine, basic sciences, engineering, and industry.
Outside the expected applications of surgical planning and trainee education, audiences were also treated to speakers showcasing other innovative uses of disruptive technologies such as 3D printing in Radiation Oncology and the use of Virtual Reality in music therapy, as well as the societal impacts of 3D printing. In addition, the audience received an overview of the current regulatory landscape of medical 3D printing by Dr Elizabeth McGrath of the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The Symposium was bookended with a satellite workshop in anatomical modelling which introduced participants to the fundamentals of 3d printing and segmentation, the process of generating patient-specific anatomical models from medical imaging modalities.
The Symposium marks an annual tradition in the 3dMedLab calendar, with the aim of serving as a catalyst for future ideas and as a meeting point for collaboration. 3dMedLab was born from the need for a more co-ordinated approach of disseminating 3D printing knowledge and resources throughout the University of Melbourne and MDHS associated hospitals.
