Our Indonesian High Achievers!

Every year the Melbourne Medical School welcomes a talented group of Indonesian medical students from Universitas Indonesia to undertake a year of research training with the Bachelor of Medical Science program.  The program is open to all international medical students and provides broad and in-depth training to the next generation of leaders in biomedical and clinical research.

Each year the highest performing student is awarded the Dean’s Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement.  The prize recognises outstanding performance and is awarded to the highest score across the year-long program.  In 2017 we were proud to present this $1000 prize to Mr Naivedh Bhat at the graduation ceremony held in Jakarta in late November 2017.    Naivedh undertook his clinical placement with Professor Michael Henderson at the Department of Surgical Oncology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2016. During this placement Naivedh conducted a review on “Molecular profiling in Uveal Melanoma and its clinical implications” and received a high distinction for his review.

We were also very pleased to award the first ever Bachelor of Medical Science Scholarship for High Achievement to Ms Fatmah Azzura for 2017-2018. Azzura was awarded a $5000 scholarship to contribute towards her living expenses while studying in Melbourne. This scholarship is offered to high achieving medical students entering into the program.  This is the first time the scholarship has been awarded.  Azzura is exploring the effectiveness of the artificial pancreas as a device to control and maintain blood glucose in children affected by Type 1 Diabetes as part of her research with Professor Fergus Cameron at the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department in the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Congratulations to our hard-working Indonesian students.
