Indira Barrow receives Student of the Year award

Melbourne Medical School student Indira Barrow has been recognised for her strong commitment to rural medical practice.

Indira Barrow from the University of Melbourne has been awarded the Rural Doctors Association of Australia’s (RDAA) Medical Student of the Year Award for 2021. The annual award recognises medical students who display a passion and strong commitment to rural medical practice.

Currently completing her third year of post-graduate Medicine at the University of Melbourne, Indira’s passion for rural health began during her first clinical year at Shepparton.

Indira has since undertaken remote clinical placements across Australia and aims to use the funds from the award for future remote elective placements. She is presently completing a General Practice rotation in Mallacoota.

Leading a busy life outside of her medical studies, Indira works as a Disability Support Worker, presents the community radio show Women’s Business and is a volunteer guide runner.

Indira is aiming to intern at the Royal Darwin Hospital or Alice Springs Hospital in 2023.

The award was presented at the Rural Medicine Australia (RMA21) Virtual Conference on Friday 22 October.
