Brownless Medal Recipients Announced

Professor Jonathan Kalman AO and Professor Monica Slavin have recently been awarded Brownless Medals for their exceptional contributions to the Melbourne Medical School.

The prestigious Brownless Medal honours individuals who have significantly advanced the Melbourne Medical School's global reputation in medical education, health research, policy, and practice.

The Melbourne Medical School is delighted to announce that Professor Jonathan Kalman AO and Professor Monica Slavin were selected as this year’s recipients of the Brownless Medal.

Professor Kalman, a distinguished clinician-scientist and leader of clinical and research teams at the Heart Rhythm Department of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and University of Melbourne, is a world-renowned authority in cardiac arrhythmia research. His groundbreaking work, spanning over two decades and encompassing more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, has significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Beyond his clinical and research endeavours, Professor Kalman has dedicated himself to training and mentoring generations of academic electrophysiologists both domestically and internationally.

Professor Slavin, a globally recognised expert in infectious diseases, leads the Department of Infectious Disease at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Immunocompromised Host Infection Service at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. With an eminent 30-year career, she has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and made significant contributions to research and clinical practice, particularly in the area of managing and mitigating the risk of life-threatening infections in vulnerable patient populations. Renowned for her exceptional mentorship and leadership, Professor Slavin is admired for her grace, persistence, and dedication to empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals.
