Professor Neeraj Bhala awarded 2025 Bisset Hawkins Medal
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Professor Neeraj Bhala has been awarded the 2025 Bisset Hawkins Medal by the Royal College of Physicians in London in recognition of his contributions to public health and sanitary science and his commitment to reducing preventable gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

“I’m deeply honoured to be the first Indian origin recipient of the RCP Bisset Hawkins Medal in 125 years, acknowledging this reflects the dedication of so many colleagues past and present striving to improve digestive health worldwide,” Professor Bhala said.
“This honour renews my commitment to paying it forward by supporting the next generation of clinicians and researchers to create sustained global impacts.”
Professor Bhala is Professor of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at the Melbourne Medical School, as well as Academic Director and Head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The Bisset Hawkins Medal is awarded every three years by the Royal College of Physicians of London to acknowledge work done in the preceding ten years in advancing sanitary science or promoting public health.
