Evidence-Based Antimicrobial Stewardship: Sustainable Implementation in Primary Care - The EASSI-PC Trial
Project Details

The Evidence-based Antimicrobial Stewardship: Sustainable Implementation in Primary Care (EASSI-PC) trial is working with general practices across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia to test practical, real-world ways to improve antibiotic use in primary care, slow antimicrobial resistance, and support safer care for patients. Over 10 million Australians receive antibiotics each year, often for self-limiting infections, which contributes to the avoidable and growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. This threatens the availability of affordable and reliable treatments for everyday infections and brings us closer to a post-antibiotic era.
Despite strong evidence supporting antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions, uptake in primary care remains limited. EASSI-PC aims to close this evidence–practice gap by implementing, evaluating and scaling up co-designed AMS strategies with general practitioners, tailored to the realities of everyday general practice. By focusing on sustainable, evidence-based approaches, the trial seeks to embed lasting improvements in antibiotic prescribing and protect the effectiveness of these vital medicines for the future.
