Evaluation of natural language processing of general practice free text health records
Project Details

This project aims to examine the progress notes of general practice patient electronic medical records (EMR) to investigate the types of clinical data that are collected to help guide clinical coding requirements for automating outcome measurement and ascertainment in future general practice-based research studies. We will investigate how preventive health activities and any associated clinical diagnoses or risk behaviours are recorded the EMR including in the progress notes section of the EMR. We will examine the language and terms used, their format and frequency. This information will be used to guide the development of natural language processing (NLP) algorithms which can automatically obtain reusable data from progress notes to measure research outcomes in future general practice-based research.
