Management of Chlamydia Cases in Australia (MoCCA)

Project Details

The aim of this project was to develop, implement and evaluate a model of care for strengthening chlamydia management in general practice.

More information can be found on the MOCCA website

Prof Jane Hocking

Overview:

The MoCCA study is  implementing and evaluating strategies for strengthening management of chlamydia infections in general practice clinics in Australia. MoCCA involves a website and other resources that incorporate best practice chlamydia care to support GPs in managing a patient with a chlamydia infection.  In particular, MoCCA will focus on integrating strategies to support partner management, retesting for reinfection and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) detection.

The MoCCA pilot will involve 4-6 clinics across Victoria, NSW and Queensland for 4-6 months to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the MoCCA model of care.  Following the pilot, MoCCA will be implemented in 40-60 clinics across the 3 states in an interrupted time series study to evaluate the impact of MoCCA on retesting rates, patient delivered partner therapy (a method of partner notification) and on diagnosis rates of PID.

To provide an objective measure of the impact of MoCCA on these aspects of chlamydia management, MoCCA will collect (via GHRANITE) non-identifiable patient data that will be used to determine chlamydia testing patterns, chlamydia positivityrates, retesting practices and PID diagnosis rates.

Research Outcomes

  • A summary report detailing findings of chlamydia testing, positivity, retesting and reinfection rates for the three pilot clinics is publicly available on the study.
