Understanding General Practice perspectives and data repositories to prevent type 2 diabetes after gestational diabetes

Project Details

This project will use Patron data to characterise patients with GDM and related primary care encounters and outcomes and aims to inform further research with regard to the prevention of T2DM after GDM.

Patron ID: PAT090

Project Lead:

Professor Dougie Boyle

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance with initial onset in pregnancy, without pre-existing Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and is a risk factor for developing T2DM. It has been demonstrated that post-partum glycaemic screening and T2DM prevention programs are feasible in primary care settings, however further research is needed to improve reach and engagement.

GooD4Mum is a randomised controlled trial to prevent T2DM after GDM in General Practice (GP). The GooD4Mum team aims to investigate if recall and screening of women at risk of T2DM is improved by linking the National Gestational Diabetes Register (NGDR) and GP Electronic Medical Record (EMR) from the Patron primary care data repository.

The present project will be conducted in two phases with Patron data access in the second phase.

Phase 1 will adopt Health Policy and Systems Research methodologies, independent of the GooD4Mum trial, and aims to inform the trial with regard to the implementation of a linked NGDR-GP EMR system.

Phase 2 will characterise patients with GDM and related primary care encounters and outcomes, and aims to inform further research with regard to the prevention of T2DM after GDM.
