Microscopy
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology has facilities for light and epifluorescent, confocal and multi-photon microscopy, as well as tissue sectioning. The confocal microscopes are part of the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform (BOMP). Training is essential before any of these instruments can be used.

Media Preparation Unit
The Media Preparation Unit provides an enormous range of media for the cultivation of bacteria and fungi, as well as some tissue culture media. Following consultation with the co-ordinator, MPU can also make special media, trial batches of media or experimental media.

Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory
MDU PHL works closely with the Victorian Health Department, local government authorities, private and public diagnostic laboratories to protect public health. The MDU PHL is accredited with NATA for the Forensic Operations Module in addition to Medical, Veterinary and Biological Testing.
