Detecting and reducing leaks form nitrous oxide in healthcare facilities – a practical guide
Department of Critical Care researchers, led by Prof Eugenie Kayak have develop this guide in conjunction with the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care and Interim Centre for Disease Control. This report presents several methods currently used in Australia to detect and reduce leaks from nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. It also includes case studies, resources and recommended next steps to assist with the detection and reduction of leaks.
Studies have shown that nitrous oxide infrastructure leaks are common and significant, with over 70% of procured nitrous oxide often leaking prior to the point of clinical administration. The identification of nitrous leaks will support healthcare facilities to; avoid wastage, prevent environmental harm reduce costs and assess the instigation of methods, such as decommissioning infrastructure, to minimise further leaks.
