The Department of Critical Care welcomes you to join us for Dr Lucy Modra's PhD Completion Seminar titled "Sex differences in the ICU patient population in Australia and New Zealand".

Abstract:

Around the world, more men than women are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), pointing to potentially significant sex differences in the incidence, trajectory and/or management of critical illness.  This PhD comprehensively describes sex differences – systemic differences between women, men and patients classified as a third sex – admitted to ICUs in Australia and New Zealand. Sex differences are described across the domains of illness severity, mortality, vital organ support and representation in clinical research. A key finding was that women received less treatment in ICU than men, yet were similarly likely to survive their critical illness.
