Dr Raymond Hu, awarded ANZCA's Robin Smallwood Bequest

Congratulations to Dr Raymond Hu on receiving ANZCA's Robin Smallwood Bequest for his project titled "Feasibility of randomization to different flow targets for cardiopulmonary bypass".

This study is testing a new approach to reduce kidney injury, a common risk for patients undergoing heart surgery. During surgery a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine helps keep blood and oxygen flowing. Research suggests that increasing blood flow to the kidneys during this process may reduce the chance of kidney damage.

In this study, patients will be assigned one of two blood flow levels during surgery to see if it’s possible to maintain these targets consistently.

This results from this study will inform a larger trial in the future, and help set standards for safer, more effective heart surgery.
