The Use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to Investigate Delirium in Critically Ill Patients
Presenter: Marcus Young
Abstract
Delirium in critically ill patients is a fluctuating syndrome that can only be described with words. There are no laboratory tests to confirm its presence and no known cure. Despite the availability of numerous screening instruments, delirium remains under-recognised and difficult to study because of its diagnostic uncertainty and clinical heterogeneity. This research used natural language processing (NLP) to analyse clinical notes for the purpose of identifying words and phrases indicative of neurocognitive dysfunction and disturbed behaviour consistent with delirium. Collectively, the findings demonstrate that NLP offers a scalable, clinically meaningful framework for epidemiological investigation of delirium in critical care.
