Perioperative opioid stewardship in Australia
Presenter: Megan Allen
Abstract
Opioids are widely used perioperatively for surgical analgesia. However, increasing concerns have arisen about opioid-related harms. This PhD explored local perioperative opioid practice, focusing on stewardship measures to harness the therapeutic benefits and mitigate the risks. Quantitative studies included a survey of regional practice and prospective cohort studies before and after introducing a perioperative opioid stewardship program in several Melbourne Hospitals. A qualitative study of clinician-stakeholder perspectives on program implementation and a mixed methods investigation of patient perspectives concluded this research program. This thesis and the composite studies describe the perioperative opioid practice, a perioperative opioid stewardship program and its impact on practice, clinicians and patient stakeholders in Australia. Future optimisations and avenues of investigation beyond my PhD program are considered to further improve the quality and safety of opioid analgesia for surgical patients.
