Enteral electrolyte replacement during critical illness
Presenter: Samantha Bates
Abstract
Magnesium and phosphate deficiencies occur frequently in critically ill patients, requiring prompt replacement to prevent serious complications. Limited evidence is available to guide clinicians in the management and treatment of electrolyte replacement, and minimal data exists on efficacy of route of administration. In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), replacement is predominantly administered via the intravenous (IV) route. The enteral (gut) administration route offers potential for improved safety, cost and environmental sustainability. However, clinical effectiveness compared to IV route has not been demonstrated in a multi-centre setting and there is limited understanding of barriers and facilitators of administration route that could affect implementation effectiveness. This research will primarily evaluate clinically relevant outcomes of enteral versus IV replacement in a large, pragmatic multi-centre trial, whilst identifying barriers and facilitators for implementation effectiveness through process evaluation.
