The EASY-AS Trial: Evaluating Early Aortic Valve Replacement
The optimal management of patients with severe but asymptomatic aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve) is a topic of ongoing debate in cardiology. The only treatment is to replace the diseased aortic valve, but there is uncertainty about the most appropriate timing for this intervention. Current guidelines recommend waiting for symptoms to appear before replacing the valve. However, some clinicians believe it may be better to replace the valve earlier, before symptoms present, to prevent potential complications.
The EASY-AS trial is a government-funded, randomized controlled study aimed at providing robust evidence to guide the timing of aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic patients
While patients with severe aortic stenosis are typically under the care of cardiologists, general practitioners (GPs) can also refer eligible patients to participate in the EASY-AS trial.
If you are a GP aware of a patient with severe asymptomatic aortic stenosis who may be interested in the trial, you can contact the patient's treating cardiologist and the EASY-AS principal investigator (PI) at the most appropriate active trial site. The full trial eligibility criteria and a list of EASY-AS sites and PIs are available in the EASY-AS Clinician Flyer.
Once a patient is randomized into the EASY-AS trial, their clinical trial activities will be coordinated by the trial site, while their ongoing usual care remains with their regular treating cardiologist and GP.
