New training available for GPs to support patients at risk of genetic cancers
The online training and resource package developed by Cancer Council’s Familial Cancer Training Program will assist Victorian GPs to identify and refer patients who are at risk of genetic cancers to the Victorian Familial Cancer Centres for further testing.
The training program, which includes CPD points, is available at cancervic.org.au/gp-family-cancer-risk and provides GPs with relevant information about BRCA1, BRCA2 and Lynch Syndrome testing.
Upon completion of the training module, participants should be able to:
- identify appropriate patients for referral to Familial Cancer Centres
- undertake a family history relevant to familial cancer
- explain the potential medical prevention options to high risk patients
- describe the psychosocial implications of genetic variation carrier status
How can GPs support the program?
Cancer Council Victoria have produced a toolkit to assist GPs stratify at-risk patients and make referrals for genetic cancer investigations.
The toolkit also includes a media release that we have recently distributed, plus newsletter/email copy and short messages that can be shared on social media or through your online chat platforms. Your efforts to promote this important training to students, GP registrars and throughout the sector would be greatly appreciated.
