Introducing our new Academic Registrars

Welcome to our 6 new Academic Registrars for 2019.

Tim Monaghan is undertaking a qualitative research project under the supervision of Dr Jo-Anne Manski-Nankervis and Dr Rachel Canaway exploring the attitudes and beliefs of GPs, practice managers and practice nurses about the sharing and use of deidentified patient health information for the purposes of research and their perceived barriers to and facilitators for sharing such information for the purposes of research.

Rita McMorrow will be undertaking her research with A/Prof John Furler and Dr Jo-Anne Manski-Nankervis. She will be undertaking quantitative research on the impact of retrospective continuous glucose monitoring on health service utilisation in people with type 2 Diabetes as a secondary analysis of the GP-OSMOTIC study.

Eleanor Lynch will be undertaking her research project on how best to implement resources aimed at supporting GPs in the care of patients on four types of cancer treatments (oral and intravenous chemotherapy, cancer immunotherapy and targeted cancer therapy). She will be supervised by Dr Jenny Walker and Professor Jon Emery and will explore the views of GPs, oncology nurses and oncologists via qualitative interviews and focus groups on how they see a specific set of cancer care resources being used by and communicated to GPs.

Claire Mahoney will be working with Prof Lena Sanci on the project “Caring for Children and Adolescents in General Practice: Are we preparing Australian general practice registrars of all aspects of primary care paediatrics?”. This project aims to assess confidence levels of Australian GP registrars in relation to paediatric consultations. Earlier research through the department has identified Victorian GP registrars were significantly low in confidence regarding paediatric subacute conditions, such as behavioural and mental health issues.

Hok Lim is a General Practice registrar and a pharmacist. He has worked in New Zealand and Australia as a community and hospital pharmacist. He will be undertaking research on how government policy affects the price of generic (off patent) medications. He will compare international policies on the cost of perindopril as a key example. He will be supervised by Dr Phyllis Lau and Prof Lena Sanci.

Laura Beaton is happy to join the Dept of GP as an academic registrar in 2019. From California, she now calls Melbourne home and has a background in science communication.  Her project is supervised by Prof Sanci and is titled “School-based health services and eHealth: exploring health literacy of the new national digital health record system for adolescents and clinicians”
