Lost in translation: a narrative review and synthesis of the published international literature on mental health research and translation priorities (2011–2023)

The ALIVE National Centre recently published their latest paper, "Lost in Translation," which revealed persistent gaps in mental health research priority setting. Despite decades of effort, the voices of those with lived-experience of mental ill-health as well as the carers, family members and kinship groups remain underrepresented in research translation.

The ALIVE National Centre recently conducted a narrative review of the published literature on mental health research priorities (2011-2023). While they found hundreds of priorities listed across various exercises, the involvement of individuals with lived-experience and carer/family/kinship groups was notably lacking. Clinicians, academics, and government entities often dominated the prioritisation efforts, leaving key voices unheard.

With limited progress reported on addressing identified priorities, the paper highlights the urgent need for inclusive and community-driven approaches in mental health research.
