Understanding Polygenic Risk Scores

Dr Sibel Saya

Polygenic Risk Scores represent an estimate of an individual's genetic liability to a trait or disease. They can also tell you how one person's risk compares to others with a different genetic constitution. The benefits of polygenic risk scores include more refined diagnoses, improved prescribing of medication and cost-effective enhancement of primary disease prevention. However, these benefits must be weighed against the potential risks, such as uncertainties, biases, misinterpretation, misunderstandings and misuse.

It's complex topic but one that Dr Sibel Saya knows well. If you are interested in hearing more about polygenic risk scores, Sibel will be presenting an interactive workshop at the Familial Aspects of Cancer Research & Practice (FAC2024) Conference in Kingscliff, NSW.

The workshop will give an overview of the current landscape of polygenic and integrated risk in Australia, the utility of incorporating risk information and possible strategies for the use of risk information in clinical practice.

The FAC2024 conference will run from 27-30 August and can be attended both in person and online. Conference details and booking information can be found here: FAC 2024
