Safer Families Centre: Conference Presentations

Professor Kelsey Hegarty and Dr. Liz McLindon were invited to attend the European Conference on Domestic Violence, which was held from 11-13 September in Reykjavik, Iceland. The conference brought together researchers, students, professionals,
practitioners and policy makers from across Europe to share and build knowledge
and experiences on a wide range of issues concerning domestic violence. Professor Kelsey Hegarty chaired the symposium on “How do we engage people early to seek support for domestic violence?”

SAFE Team members, Professor Kelsey Hegarty, Dr. Jennifer Neil, Dr. Libby Dai, and Dr. Eleanor Bulford also attended WONCA RACGP GP Conference 2023, which was held from 26-29 October in Sydney. Professor Hegarty led the discussion on how primary care clinicians can work with men who use violence to promote healthy relationships through the Better Man project.

Safer Families research fellow Dr Liz McLindon was invited to present at the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation 16th Biennial National Conference: A Collective Force for Change, which was held on 13 October in Sydney. More than one hundred nurse, midwife and carer delegates gathered to debate key issues across the professions and help map out the agenda for the next two years.

Dr McLindon, Project Lead for the Health, Wellbeing and Relationships Project spoke about intimate partner violence, sexual assault and child abuse prevalence against Australian nurses, midwives and carers. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Health Minister Mark Butler also attended event, restating their commitment to increasing the impact of nurse practitioners and making it easier for people to enter nursing and midwifery.
