New Mental Health Research Project “Whose Care is Left Behind?” Awarded MRFF Funding

The ALIVE National Centre has been awarded the Million Minds Mission Mental Health Targeted Research Grant as part of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 2024 – 2029.

The ALIVE National Centre for Mental Health Research Translation, their researchers, co-investigators and partners have been awarded the Million Minds Mission Mental Health Targeted Research Grant for the project “Whose Care is Left Behind?” as part of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 2024 – 2029.

“Whose Care is Left Behind?” is a new mental health research initiative that seeks to address structural inequalities affecting:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
  • Rural, regional and remote communities;
  • People from culturally diverse backgrounds; and
  • People living with mental ill-health.

By creating 25 community action nodes offering service innovations focused on more flexible, placed-based, culturally-led prevention, intervention and care models and delivering care across the life course, the initiative will grow multi-level collective strategies to respond to inequalities.

Led by the ALIVE National Centre for Mental Health Research Translation, the five-year project is a collaboration between nine universities and seven mental health organisations across 25 locations. It is the sole project to be awarded Medical Research Future Funding as part of the Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission (Stream 1 Targeted Research Call). The project leads are Prof Victoria Palmer, Prof Sandra Eades AO (Noongar), and Prof Michelle Banfield.

Congratulations to the entire research team across The University of Melbourne, The Australian National University, Flinders University, Griffith University, Edith Cowan University, James Cook University, University of Tasmania, University of Queensland, University of Adelaide and to the partner organisations – Children’s Ground, Neami National, Monash Health, Mental Health Commission of New South Wales, Stride Mental Health, Roses in the Ocean, and Northern Territory Mental Health Coalition.
