Addressing Gestational Diabetes in Australia and globally

Visit Prof from University College Dublin and the conclusion of the GooD4Mum partnership project.

GooD4Mum is a quality improvement program in general practice focused on optimising care for people after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM affects around 1 in 5 people during pregnancy and is one of the strongest predictors of developing type 2 diabetes.

The 18-month GooD4Mum trial recently ended; this coincided with a visit by study co-investigator A/Prof Sharleen O’Reilly from University College Dublin. A/Prof O’Reilly’s pilot GooD4Mum study resulted in improved blood glucose monitoring in women after GDM. The new iteration of GooD4Mum utilises a GDM module in the clinical decision support tool Future Health Today.

A/Prof O’Reilly now holds a prestigious Danish Diabetes and Endocrinology Academy Visiting Professorship and is a past winner of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute’s Research Dietitian of the Year and has over €12.5M of active research funding.

While visiting the Department in October, Sharleen presented on innovative quality improvement approaches to preventing type 2 diabetes after GDM including evidence-based strategies to bridge the gap between clinical guidelines and real-world practice. She met with researchers including Head of Department Prof Lena Sanci, to explore the possibility of exciting future collaborations.
