As an educator, she employs critical and social cultural pedagogies to develop programming to address hidden curriculum effects and to enable health professionals to incorporate complex negotiations of the social world in their educational planning and implementation. Tina works with educational leaders in the department of Paediatrics and across the Faculty of Medicine to enhance educational scholarship, and to contribute to efforts to improve the learning environment with policy and curriculum interventions.

Session type: Research Focus Roundtable
Title: Closed Loop Communication in Simulation
Presenter: Prof. Jennifer Weller, University of Auckland
Overview: This session shares insights from a mixed-methods study examining how operating theatre teams communicate during simulated emergencies, with a focus on directed communication and closed-loop communication. Using detailed conversational analysis of video-recorded scenarios, the study tracked over 150 requests for action and coded each for communication type, response efficiency, and task completion. Despite widespread training in these communication strategies, their actual use was surprisingly limited; however, when employed, they proved highly effective. This observation prompts important questions about when and how these strategies are used in practice. The session will explore how these findings highlight opportunities to enhance team communication training and ultimately improve patient safety.
Tuesday 11 November (4-7pm)
EXCITE Showcase – 2025 Victorian Showcase of Research in Health Professions Education
The Victorian Showcase of Research in Health Professions Education is an opportunity for students in the Master of Clinical Education (Department of Medical Education, University of Melbourne) to present their work. This is a great opportunity to hear emerging health profession education researchers present their findings.
This year we are excited to be able to present a hybrid event with both face-to-face and online presentations. The Showcase provides a supportive forum to build and strengthen the growing community of health professions education researchers. If you are engaged in health professions education, research and/or practice, you are very welcome to attend and join in the virtual conversations about scholarship in the field of health professions clinical education.
