Project title
Developing adaptive expertise in simulation debriefing.
Abstract / overview of project
Debriefings after immersive simulation-based scenarios represent complex social interactions. During interprofessional team-based debriefings, facilitators must navigate varied emotions, agendas, and professional and relational backgrounds of participants alongside the socio-material dynamic of clinical contexts. Whilst the evidence base is growing around structured faculty development processes related to these essential learning conversations in simulation, we understand less about how facilitators develop the adaptive expertise (AE) they require to negotiate this complexity effectively. This research program will explore AE in healthcare debriefing by examining facilitators' thought processes and actions to better articulate approaches to help facilitators navigate these complex social dynamics.
