Honorary Application Process
Thank you for your interest in becoming an Honorary with Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, University of Melbourne.
Applications are assessed regularly each year and appointments are made in recognition of significant, sustained contributions in the areas of:
- Learning and teaching
- Research and research training
- Leadership and service.

^Internal referee means a current honorary or salaried academic member within the University of Melbourne Department of OGN. The referee must be at the same academic level or higher than the position applied for, and would ideally be the applicant’s supervisor/ mentor in a research, clinical or leadership domain. $External referee means a referee from outside the University of Melbourne and outside the applicant’s usual place of paid employment. The external referee would be expected to have a Level D or E academic appointment at an Australian approved research institute or international equivalent.* If the appointee is a full professor of a Group of Eight, Universitas 21, Asia Pacific Rim Universities, China 9 group institutions, or a full Professor with existing esteemed academic recognition as specified in MPF1299, then Referee Reports are not required. |

Assessment of Applications
Please view the honorary applications process map for our Department here.
For Clinical and Academic Honorary Appointment application Level B - C:
- These are forwarded to the Department Coordinators for assessment and approval on an as needed basis.
- Please allow 6-8 weeks turnaround time, depending on schedule.
For Clinical and Academic Honorary Appointment application Level D - E:
- These are assessed by the Department Academic Appointments & Promotions Committee (AAPC).
- If endorsed by AAPC these are forwarded to the Head of Department for assessment and recommendation.
- Then these are forwarded to the Head of the Melbourne Medical School for assessment and subsequent recommendation to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences for assessment.
- For Level E once endorsed by the Dean, the application will be recommended to the University’s Senior Academic and Promotions Committee for final assessment and approval.
- You will generally hear the decision within 6-8 weeks, please allow a total of 3 months turnaround time.
Continuation of the Honorary Appointment
Ongoing appointments will be based on you continuing to fulfil the criteria for which you were appointed, by maintaining an ongoing and meaningful contribution to the University of Melbourne.
Levels A-D appointments are for fixed terms and subject to periodic review.
Level E appointments are usually for a period of five years, and a case must be made for renewal at the end of each period.
